DESCRIPTION:Register here \nWe invite you to join us on Tuesday\, July 28\, at 11:00 a.m. (CDT) for a presentation by Paul Runko of Defending Education\, who will discuss concerns raised about the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Learning for Justice curriculum program (formerly Teaching Tolerance). \nParent groups and school districts across the country have questioned whether Learning for Justice curricular materials move beyond traditional anti-bullying and tolerance education to promote social justice activism and ideological viewpoints. Drawing from Defending Education’s research\, Mr. Runko will provide an overview of the organization’s curriculum\, Social Justice Standards\, and examples of how these materials have been incorporated into schools and educational programs nationwide. \nWhile the Kansas State Board of Education establishes academic standards\, local boards of education retain the authority under (K.S.A. 72-1138) to review\, approve\, and adopt textbooks and instructional materials for use in their schools. As such\, school board members have an important responsibility to understand curriculum issues and evaluate instructional resources to ensure they align with district goals and community expectations. \nJoin us for this informative discussion and opportunity to learn more about a topic that has generated significant interest among parents\, educators\, and policymakers. \nPanelist: \nPaul Runko\, Jr. is Senior Director of K-12 Initiatives at Defending Education\, where he leads national efforts to support parents\, grandparents\, and concerned citizens in advancing academic excellence and political-neutrality reforms in America’s schools. In his current role\, Mr. Runko develops and executes strategic initiatives addressing key issues in K-12 education policy\, including curriculum transparency\, parental rights\, and ensuring civil rights. Senator Erickson  champions fiscal responsibility\, educational freedom\, and constitutional rights. \n  \nDr. Megan Steele\, is the Kansas Representative for District 51. Representative Steele serves on the Education Funding Task Force\, Education\, and K-12 Education Budget Committees. Her personal journey from young motherhood to earning a Ph.D. in Nursing and serving as an educator has taught her the importance of faith and grit. DESCRIPTION:Register here \nJoin us on Thursday\, February 12\, at 12:00 PM (CDT) for a presentation by McPherson Middle School Principal Ms. Inge Esping and school social worker Ms. Carrie Brock. They will discuss how McPherson Middle School administration and teachers arrived at the decision to return to pencil and paper homework assignments and significantly reduce the use of Chromebooks in the classroom. They will also update us on how this policy and practice is going since students returned to the classroom and the implementation of this new policy in January. \nMcPherson has an enrollment of nearly 500 students and is one of newest schools to take this step\, while others are contemplating moving away from a dependence on technology and returning to traditional pencil and paper. This new policy is also aimed at improving students’ focus and attention in the classroom and ultimately improving student performance and mental health. \nMs. Esping argues that when students are flooded by so many distractions\, it makes it very challenging for them to stay tuned in to the classroom and to the teacher\, and students seem to engage more and attend better when they’re physically able to feel the materials in their hands. Ms. Esping learned that others who have taken this step have been able to save money and have better learning outcomes in the long term as a direct result of this policy change. \nPanelist: \nMs. Inge Esping\, is the principal of McPherson Middle School in McPherson\, KS with a population of about . During her tenure\, she has led a cultural transformation centered on safety\, connection\, and consistency. Ms. Esping has implemented initiatives such as Bullpup Time Advisory\, and the Resiliency Initiative and the Parents in Partnership program. Under her leadership\, McPherson has been recognized as a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School for five consecutive years. Ms. Inge was recently named 2025 Kansas Middle Level Principal of the Year by the Kansas Principals Association. \nA Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist™\, Carrie Brock holds an MSW from Washburn University and a BSW from Kansas State University. In addition to his roles at UWO\, he serves on the Oshkosh Area School District School Board and previously served two terms on the Oshkosh Common Council. He also writes monthly columns for the Public Administration Times and the Oshkosh Herald. His work on school board governance has been featured in a variety of media\, including the Washington Post\, the Houston Chronicle\, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel\, the Associated Press\, and Wisconsin Public Radio. \nPrior to joining Academia Ford served as a Research Associate and Vice President of Operations for School Choice Wisconsin (2004 – 2011)\, and Research Director for the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute (2011 – 2013). The Executive Order by President Trump signed to end government support for programs promoting diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. In compliance with this order\, the Department of Agriculture removed all DEI language from its website: Non-Discrimination Statement | Home. \nSome have raised the issue that districts may be faced with falling out of compliance with federal and state law\, risk losing federal funding\, could be in danger of legal action if they sign the contract\, and may be simultaneously at risk of losing funding from KSDE for student food programs if the agreement is not signed by June 30. \nKSBRC is excited to introduce you to Fritz Edmunds\, the new SBAE Legal Hotline attorney serving Kansas School Boards. While working on a master’s in education he took as electives\, 12 credit hours required of Superintendent candidates in Kansas. Bob served two terms on the Goddard Board of Education\, including serving as both the board Vice President and President. This allowed him to apply behavioral interview procedures from the private sector to the evaluation for the leadership role in public schools. He is also past president of the Mulvane Teachers Association. Bob has taught on four continents and may be the only Kansan who has skyped in and voted on BOE actions from India\, Brazil\, Canada\, and China!

We understand there are outstanding potential candidates who are interested in improving our schools so our students can be prepared for their careers and college after high school\, but just don’t know how to go about that process. These events are designed to recruit those candidates and provide confidence and guidance that will support them in serving. \n  \nEVENT HIGHLIGHTS \n\nDave Trabert\, author of 8 Things to Know about Running for School Board\, will discuss key points in his new book. The book’s purpose is to provide coaching for potential school board candidates and current board members on how to find the information they need to support student outcome improvement. SUMMARY:USDE’s Office of Civil Rights letter notifying school districts to eliminate all DEI programs or potential loss of federal funding
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, February 26th\, at 4 pm (CDT) for a discussion concerning the recent Executive Order by President Trump to end government support for programs promoting diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) issued a Dear Colleague letter on Feb. 14 demanding that state agencies and school districts remove all diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI) programming from school district curriculums and warning that failure to comply with the directive by Feb. 28 could result in cuts in federal funding. Federal aid accounted for approximately 12% of public school funding in Kansas. The Kansas State Department of Education has left the decision on how to handle diversity\, equity\, and inclusion content in the hands of local school officials.  \nThe School Boards for Academic Excellence Kansas legal hotline team\, Ryan Kriegshauser and Josh Ney\, from the Kriegshauser Ney Law Group will provide an overview of the ORC letter and discuss the legal implications for school boards under this new directive.  \nPanelists: \nRyan A. Kriegshauser \nMr. Krieghauser has served his country as a Naval Officer and is a veteran of Afghanistan. Ryan also served as a prosecutor and the General Counsel at the Office of the Kansas Securities Commissioner. Ryan previously served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Office of Legal Counsel and Policy. He also served on the Kansas Judicial Counsel’s Lien Law Advisory Committee\, the State Rules and Regulation Board\, the Kansas Bar Association’s Limited Liability Company Study Group\, and served as a voting member of the Kansas Governor’s Commission on Emergency Planning & Response Continuity of Operations Planning Committee. \n​Additionally\, Ryan has written scholarly articles on property rights and taught continuing legal education in Kansas. He spent two years working in Washington\, DC\, both on and off Capitol Hill. \n​Mr. Kriegshauser holds a B.A. and a J.D.\, graduating from Georgetown University and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. He currently serves in the Navy Reserve.  \n  \nJoshua A. Ney:  \nJosh Ney served as the Kansas Securities Commissioner and as Kansas’s chief regulator of the financial services industry from 2013-2017. Josh has personally won jury verdicts for his clients in both federal and state court. His extensive experience in complex civil and administrative legal disputes has established Josh’s career as a public servant and private litigator around maintaining integrity and accomplishing results. \nAs an experienced criminal litigator both for the prosecution and criminal defense clients\, Mr. Ney has successfully tried many high-level jury trials to verdict.
